Sarzana

Sarzana is located in the rich and wide plain of the Magra river, in the centre of Lunigiana. It looks like a modern artisan, agricultural and tourist centre with a huge artistic wealth, however it conserves its peculiarity as a walled town almost unaltered.

The historical centre, almost completely closed to traffic, still maintains the characteristics of an ancient and glorious past. Squares and streets full of memorable monuments, but also full of smart shops and pastry shops, (where you can taste the typical local cake "la spongata"), follow one another from Porta Parma to Porta Romana.

Historically noteworthy is without doubt St. Mary's Cathedral (XII century) representing a real treasure of art history (a Romanesque Portal, Gothic pediments and, inside, a Baroque altar and a Baroque ceiling).

Other churches such as St. Andrew, St. Francis and the Church of Capuchins are in no way inferior. Finally, the castles of Sarzana: Firmafede fortress, called Cittadella, and the Castle of Sarzanello.

The city is famous for its several antique shops and restoration workshops. In August, one of the most important Italian antique markets "La soffitta nelle strade" (the open air loft) is held in the streets of Sarzana. Also in August, The National Antique Exhibition is held at the Cittadella where you can admire furniture, jewelerry and numerous art objects, often coming from famous collections or, in any case, pieces of special interest.
