        The "lizzatura"

The lizzatura on Via Vandelli - Resceto (Massa)
In the past, the blocks of marble were lowered from the montains to the sea, by a system known as "lizzatura". This involved the use of a large sledge ("lizza"), pulled by oxen and this highly dangerous operation was controlled by experienced quarrymen.

In the summer, to recall how this used to be done, experienced quarrymen lower a block of marble using the traditional method.

So don't forget to include this spectacular event, when you are planning a visit to the quarries!

        The next Lizzatura
